What’s the best high-proof tequila for a cocktail? It’s hard to say with so many options these days! Tess Rose selects 9 high-proof tequilas that stand alone yet also stand up to strong flavors in mixed drinks. All recommendations are 100% independent.
There is no technical definition of high-proof tequila. In my book, anything over 45% ABV qualifies. Crisp blancos that have the volume turned up on their agave flavor are my go-tos for summery drinks like frozen Margaritas, long drinks with a bubbly element like Palomas, and herbal concoctions that rely on just-picked garden flavors–like a tomato and thyme Tequila Martini. High ABV blancos tend to stand up nicely and impart agave flavor in cocktails, while also ensuring that drinks with a lot of volume still pack a good punch of alcohol. This category seems to be untouched by the overall trend of low alcohol preferences. Over the past decade, interest in the category has grown–along with the available expressions. We are here for it, and these are the nine high-proof blanco tequila bottles we will be reaching for this summer.

Don Fulano Fuerte
50% ABV
A crisp and clean blanco bursting with agave character. This is great for sipping neat, on the rocks, and in drinks that play up the fruity and grassy notes. Try this in a Paloma that features fresh garden herbs, or a frozen grapefruit-basil paleta. Stay tuned for my complete tasting notes!
Tapatio 110
55% ABV
A classic and a bartender favorite for a reason, this high-proof tequila is bright and peppery, with a rich, oily texture and layers of citrus. The intensity of this spirit is suited for frozen drinks where the agave flavor will still shine through the super cold texture and added ingredients. The rich texture also makes this a go-to for stirred drinks, like a potent tequila Negroni or Martini, both of which also include an opportunity for orange bitters to complement Tapatio’s citrusy spark.

Patron 100
50% ABV
A newly launched still-strength bottling, this has all of the classic Patron flavors–with the volume turned up. The clean minerality with notes of lemongrass and vanilla are bright, juicy, and crisp. Use this as the base of aromatic drinks that feature flavors like elderflower, mango, or guava to add a touch of spice and minerality that will complement the heady perfume. Cascahuin Plata 48
48% ABV
A moderate high-proof tequila that’s all about balance, this is a true hidden gem. At 48%, this may get overlooked by those searching for something super potent, and ignored by those who prefer a more traditional 40ish % ABV. But it’s Goldilocks approved! Cascahuin Plata 48 is neither hot nor bland, and strikes the balance of massive agave flavor without any additional alcoholic punch. Perhaps the best high-proof tequila for straight sipping, it’s also nice in simple drinks that let the pure agave flavors shine, like tequila sodas or Tommy’s margaritas.

Lalo High-Proof
50% ABV
A newcomer to the high-proof tequila world, Lalo is still experimenting. The latest edition was distilled to proof at 50% ABV and feature clean vegetal flavors bursting with bell pepper, herbs, and ripe cooked agave notes. The grassiness of this tequila makes it fun to mix into savory drinks that feature summer garden delights like mixed herbs, cucumber, tomato and chili peppers. Wild Common Still Strength
50% ABV
Made at the Cascahuin distillery, this quickly became an industry favorite for its bold flavorful profile, which showcases juicy agave notes, intense minerality, and substantial mouthfeel. Tons of flavor means that it is delicious as-is for neat sipping, and the rich texture makes it a favorite for stirred drinks. A versatile option for anyone looking to try out a high-proof tequila.

Cazcanes No.10 Still Strength
54% ABV
Cazcanes bottles at different strengths, including another blanco at 50% ABV, but if you’re searching for the most agave flavor and highest impact you’ll want to check out the No.10 version. The elevated alcohol is evident on the palate, but balanced with the bold flavors. Leading with minerality and a rich texture, this tequila is bursting with enough flavor to be worth sipping on its own. It would stand up in just about anything–think tequila tiki drinks, blended frozen drinks, or crispy shaken margaritas. A splash of this in some ceviche or crudo wouldn’t hurt either.

Arette Fuerte Artesanal
50.5% ABV
As part of the artisanal line, this high-proof tequila is made for those who prioritize agave rich flavors and bold textures. Bright with earthy and floral notes and a clean crisp texture, Arette Fuerte makes a great canvas for creating customized tequila cocktails. It plays nice with others while retaining a strong agave character. A favorite combination with this is a spiked agua de jamaica that has a touch of honey and star anise.
PM Spirits Still Strength
55% ABV
In line with the rest of the PM Spirits portfolio, this tequila is made with extreme precision and no detail overlooked. Made from a single oven, this small batch tequila is distilled to proof to extract the greatest possible agave character from estate grown agaves. Impressively smooth for its high alcohol content, the flavors are pepper and spicy without being hot. Good enough to sip neat, and bold enough to shine through, especially in classic tequila cocktails where the spirit’s natural flavor remains the star.
