Background
Mijenta Tequila is only six years old, and already a well-known brand in the craft tequila landscape. Since their well-publicized 2020 launch, they’ve stayed on the radar with new releases that seek to be innovative and unique. Their Symphony line is a part of that effort and hinges on sourcing oak staves from different regions to build one-of-a-kind barrels. The idea is that the total is more than the sum of its parts. It’s a playful approach to tequila aging, and enticing to those who crave novelty.
The newest release, Symphony No. 3, marries oak staves from forests across Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, which is certainly novel! Their base tequila rests in casks made from this blend of staves for around three years and then gets bottled at 45% ABV. The result is symphonic, with the different oak staves contributing different flavor and textures to the final product.
This special release comes in an opaque matte royal blue bottle decorated with the brand’s signature rabbit. The tequila itself is a very light golden color; always a green flag when it comes to aged tequilas, and no surprise as the brand proudly identifies as additive free (a dark color in aged tequilas can sometimes indicate coloring additives). The aroma is agave-forward, with subtle undertones of vanilla and caramel supporting earthy pine. The flavors are warm and robust, baking spices mixing with juicy ripe pineapple, custard, and stone fruit. The balance between fresh notes and brown sugar, vanilla, and tobacco spices is spot on–offering a ton of flavor without covering up the flavor of quality agave. The finish is a touch spicy and earthy, leaving the mouth clean. This is a tasty treat to sip, and would make a fine after dinner sipper, especially alongside aged gouda and stone fruit preserves.
Available now, bottles retail for $119 from their website, and at select retailers across the United States.
