Note: Mezcalistas is an independent publication. Our tasting notes are not pay to play but rather fair and honest assessments from well-honed palates.
When it comes to tequila, it has been an unusually busy year for Mezcalistas. Covering the allegations of corruption in the tequila industry has kept us on our toes. Turns out there’s bad tequila and then there’s “tequila” that isn’t tequila at all (ALLEGEDLY). All of this talk about crap tequila has some people wondering if ANY tequila can be trusted. The first time a friend asked me this, I almost spit up my tequila (a blanco from Seite Leguas, for the record).
“Of course there’s still good tequila!” I squeaked in indignation. (And then naturally I insisted that she sample the proof with me.)
It was never our intention to imply that the entire tequila industry is shady. Our motivation for exposing (allegedly) bad actors is, in part, because we respect the time, money, and skill that it takes to make good tequila. And we respect the tequileros who are upholding that tradition. To prove this point…
It has been some time since we published any tasting notes, so we thought to re-start that program by asking Tess Rose to taste some tequilas. (She has such a hard job.) First she compared three fan-favorite 100% agave blancos: Tequileño Platinum, Ocho Plata, and Lalo Blanco.
She writes, “The flavors are crisp and ripe, with a luscious texture that fills the mouth. Notes of green mango, tender herbs, and juicy roasted pineapple are balanced and rich. The finish is long and flavorful. An easy-to-love blanco tequila.”
