Details
- Location: El Mosco, Sierra Occidental de Jalisco
- Agave: Maximiliana (Maguey Lechuguilla) / A. Angustifolia (Maguey Chico Aguiar)
- Maestro: José Salcedo Rios
- ABV: 45.5
- Tasting keywords: rounded, sweet
Nose: sweet, hint of acetone
Taste: This doesn’t have any notes I’d normally associate with a reposado. The spirit has a well-rounded sweetness, but is devoid of the cloying caramel flavors that dominate so many reposado tequilas. A touch of spice on the tongue with a subtle base note of charcoal–no sign of the acetone hinted at on the nose. The overall profile is straightforward and pleasant. Like the Tabernas Hermanos blanco, this is an accessible raicilla.
Production Details
- Roast: Oak-fired adobe oven
- Crush: Machete and small corn mill
- Ferment: Tinaco, wild yeast
- Distillation: Double-distilled in copper and stainless steel
- Rested three months in an oloroso sherry cask.
Background
José Salcedo Rios is a younger producer with a neat little taberna in the mountainous countryside near Mascota. He runs a tight ship and approaches production with a scientific precision. His taberna is surrounded by an agave nursery.
Founded in 2011 by Esteban Morales Garibi, La Venenosa showcases small producers from all over Jalisco–many within the raicilla DO. Despite pioneer status in the raicilla category in terms of branding and international distribution, La Venenosa bottles are now labeled as Espiritus de Jalisco, Aguardiente de Agave, or Agave Distilate.
