Jose Guardado started Mil Lumbres working with his cousin Gilberto Roldan before expanding to a proprietary vinata and local production team in 2024. The vision for the brand is for the presentation to match the quality of what’s inside, and features artisanally hand made ceramic bottles sourced from Guanajuato. Jose’s long standing small town connections means he gets access to wild agaves from private property, ensuring top quality for each unique batch.
Mil Lumbres Sotol production is distinct from agave, requiring more specialized skill in getting an even crush for smooth fermentation. Additionally, fermentation is quicker with sotol, and can be jumpstarted just by rain during warm temperatures, with fermentation starting to bubble in just 2-3 hours.
